Downtown Sacramento served as a blank canvas for local artists with the launch of The Downtown Mural Project. This inaugural project for the DSF targeted the walls of the vacant lot at the corner of 8th and K streets. Nine mural designs by local artists were selected. Work began at the beginning of June 2013 and was completed in September 2013. Nine temporary mural designs were selected for installation around the vacant lot on the corner of 8th and K Streets. Each temporary mural was painted onto a panel that is 12′ wide x 8’ tall and  was installed to weather the outdoor elements and regular wear and tear of an urban street environment.

The Downtown Mural Project was funded through private donations to the Downtown Sacramento Foundation. The Sacramento Downtown Plaza pledged the first $2,500 donation to the mural project in The Kay district, and was followed by support from the City of Sacramento’s Economic Development Department as a community members fundraiser.
