Congratulations to our Calling All Dreamers Grand Prize Winner Ana Apple!
Grand Prize winner Ana Apple will receive a business start up package valued at $135,000. The quirky, eco-friendly line of apparel for infants, youth and adults will open its first retail store at 1200 2nd Street in Old Sacramento in time for the holiday season.
The 1,000 square foot space will house Ana Apple’s production studio, a retail experience and a community workshop space for youth ages 5 to 18. The company mantra, “small actions add up to make a significant impact,” embodies the entrepreneurial spirit and philosophy for growing small businesses in which the competition was created to cultivate in Downtown Sacramento. Ana Apple will be a perfect complement to the historic Old Sacramento district’s retail mix and its diverse community of local entrepreneurs.
The Calling All Dreamers winner was selected from a field of 33 contestants, who applied in February 2014. The DSF narrowed it down to the top finalists, which included: Off the Chain Bus Bike Tours, Climbing & Mountaineering Sacramento, Metro Juice Company and Better Foods Deli. The DSP and DSF will continue to work with the finalists and as many of the contestants as possible to get them ready to open a downtown storefront.
What is the Calling all Dreamers competition?
It is a retail business plan competition produced by the DSF. Our goal is simple. We want to foster Sacramento’s entrepreneurial spirit and cultivate the next generation of dreamers. We know running a small business isn’t easy. So, we’re here to help. The winner of this competition will have the chance to open a downtown storefront, earn a cash prize and business services valued at approximately $135,000.
How will this competition help me launch my business
We know taking a business from a dream to reality is a complicated task, and the first year is usually the most difficult for small businesses. With that in mind, the business startup package has been specifically designed to provide the winner with the resources and tools needed to succeed. The Downtown Sacramento Foundation with the generous support of our sponsors will help the winning entrepreneur navigate the challenges of that first year in business. The winner will receive a business start-up package valued at $145,000, which includes a cash prize of $10,000—plus up to one year of free rent, and a suite of business services. The winner of this competition will open a storefront in Downtown Sacramento in November 2014.
