About the Downtown Mural Project
This spring Downtown Sacramento will serve as a blank canvas for local artists with the launch of The Downtown Mural Project. The Downtown Sacramento Foundation (DSF) recently released a call for artists for murals on the vacant lot at the corner of 8th and K streets. Up to 14 mural designs by local artists will be selected and installed throughout the spring and summer months. Each artist selected for the project will receive a $250 grant. The Downtown Mural Project will be funded through private donations to the Downtown Sacramento Foundation. The Sacramento Downtown Plaza has pledged the first $2,500 donation to the project in The Kay district.

State of Downtown 2013
Date: January 15, 2013
Time: 8 – 10 am
Place: Sacramento Convention Center • 1400 J Street, Exhibit Hall D

Moving Sacramento Forward
Downtown Sacramento is on the cusp of an economic turnaround with many long-term goals accomplished and key developments underway. In order to move Sacramento forward, we must lay the foundation for future sustainable growth that will propel us into the next economy.

Keynote Speaker: Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom
With a dual perspective as both entrepreneur and elected official, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom will discuss his experience in developing public-private partnerships, redefining current policy practices, and fostering collaboration and innovation to encourage economic growth.

Event Overview:
More than 500 business and community leaders and elected officials attended the DSP’s (DSP) State of Downtown breakfast at the Sacramento Convention Center on January 15. Keynote speaker Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a compelling keynote address that not only laid the case for the importance of a strong downtown core, but also for the foundation for economic revitalization of our city and region.

Key takeaways from the event:

The biggest risk is not that we aim too high and miss it. The biggest risk is that we aim to low and achieve it. Don’t worry about aiming too high. Just don’t set the bar too low that it is easy to achieve.

Top 3 Trends that will lead to success in your city: Urbanization, Hyper-Connectivity, Quality of Life

Trend #1 – Urbanization: Urbaniziation defines one of the most significant trends in our lifetime. It is estimated that over 150,000-180,000 people will become urbanites every day and 60% of the world’s population will reside in cities. It’s cities that will determine the fate of the State of California

Trend #2 – Hyper-connectivity: The world is no longer connected, but rather hyper-connected. The tools of technology (Twitter, Linked In, Skype, Cloud, etc) are changing the way we operate. The is a whole generation of digital natives (in contrast to our current generation of digital immigrants) that will radically alter the playing field. We need to make local economic development relevant to this next generation. Don’t argue for today. Make the case in your work for tomorrow.

Trend #3 – Quality of Life: Enliven the cities. Sweat the small things. Farmers Markets matters. Parklets matter. Art Matters. Bicycles matter. Design space and cities for people.

We need to enliven the senses and instill that sense of well-being that defines that proud history of California. This is a state of dreamers and doers, of entrepreneurs and innovators who have always prided themselves in leading the cutting edge and new ideas. It is the pioneer spirit.

Old Sacramento’s Theatre of Lights is a unique state-of-the-art live staging of the classic ’Twas The Night Before Christmas. The show blends a symphony of lights, sounds and visual effects which will take the audience back to a time when the beloved poem ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas was first introduced in Sacramento in 1857 in The Sacramento Bee. The beloved poem comes to life on the balconies and rooftops of Old Sacramento’s historic buildings on K Street between Front and 2nd Street.

Opening night is, as always, the night before Thanksgiving. This years Theatre of Lights season begins with the lighting of the City Christmas Tree on Nov. 21. Festivities begin at 5:30 pm, followed by the official tree lighting at 6:30 pm and first Theatre of Lights performance of the season begins immediately after the tree lighting.

On New Year’s Eve Theatre of Lights will be a key component of the festivities leading up to the fireworks spectacular and shows will run later in the evening at 7 pm and 8:30 pm.

The show will run Thursday – Sunday through New Year’s Eve with a special holiday show on Christmas Eve. There will be no show on Thanksgiving.
Food for thought: Every wonder why shopping local is such a BIG deal? If half of the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $43.6 billion in revenue.* For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. *Source: The 3/50 Project
